Shaking Hands & Handshakes:          On Meeting a Legend

Some of you may have seen my comment the other day when I mentioned I was so honored and excited to meet and shake hands with the great William F. Nolan at World Horror Convention 2014 that I couldn't even get it together to ask him to sign my copies of SHOCK TOTEM 7 (which contains his amazing flash piece "The Horror That Et My Pap—and Other Swamp Stuff") or EVIL JESTER PRESENTS PREMIERE ISSUE (which features an adaptation of the terrifying "Small World").

So, naturally, I thought it was beyond cool when Ken Wood of Shock Totem Publications suggested I get in touch with Jason V Brock to send it to Mr. Nolan by mail for a signature and Jason happily agreed to arrange it. That's pretty cool, right?

Well, as if that wasn't enough! I just caught wind of this pingback from a quick Goodreads blog post of mine shared by Rose Blackthorn, an extraordinary writer and person I had the luxury of spending time with at the con.

It's not just the humility that legends like Mr. Nolan show that makes something like this mean more than words can express. It's the contributions he makes to the community of writers and the world of literature itself beyond just the writing. If you haven't watched his acceptance speech for the Bram Stoker Award he was given for NOLAN ON BRADBURY, remedy that. (Watch the entire award ceremony on video here.) If you've missed out on any of his work—fiction or non-fiction—remedy that. If you don't follow him on his fan page, Facebook, or Twitter, remedy that. He is a true gem in the industry with much to teach us about many things...about writing, about writers, and about being the kind of figure—both as an icon and a human being—who makes a mark on others in ways he may never know. He doesn't just care about writing, writers, or readers...he cares about animals, about our world, about the things we feed our bodies and minds...and his reach will go beyond just us, and the generations of readers and writers to come. He's so much more than just an author...but he's the kind that makes being one so appealing.

I’ll admit it...I’m starstruck. But more than that, I’m encouraged. Knowing that legends like William F. Nolan care enough, and take the time, to engage with fans and the younger generation of writers who both admire and emulate him is all I need to keep me feeling like I’m right where I belong.

So thank you, Mr. Nolan...thank you from the bottom of my big, dark heart!

I had the pleasure to listen to Mr. Nolan read a couple short stories at WHY 2014 and immediately became a fan. He is a genuine human being.
On another note, I had a wonderful time hanging out with Rose Blackthorn and Sydney Leigh. Both of these women are amazing people and made my time spent with them an experience that I will never forget. Thanks for the memories!

Aw, Geno—you're such a doll. I could not have enjoyed myself more than I did with you and Rose. (And Carl!) Your support of Rose and her writing was something to behold. The two of you are lovely, and I hope we get to see each other again. It was a great experience on many levels, and I am blessed to have the memories I do of you, Rose, and WHC 2014!
