Drabble: "The Girl with the Butterfly Mouth"

"The Girl with the Butterfly Mouth"
by Sydney Leigh

Her tongue is papery dust; skin shimmers and folds as she lands in dreams. Black feelers reach for your innermost thoughts; lust-backed carnal longings paint indigo scales on wings.
When she lies dormant, her breath steals soft dirt; soil poisoned by minerals steeped in hatred.
Upon waking—Mourning Cloak metamorphosis—her mimicry begins to terrify, your dream now a nightmare.
She binds you to a leaf with the glue of a thousand unicorns, where your screams are lost amidst thunderous fluttering.
If only you’d known how far she could migrate, you would never have held her down and said shhh.

Villipede Publications and Luke Spooner of Carrion House join forces to explore disorders and syndromes through dark art in "IdEntities"

Villipede Publications recently embarked on an extremely unique project with Luke Spooner of Carrion House, and we are collaborating to create a very special book of his artwork.

But the book is not just art—it is an exploration of mental and psychological disorders and syndromes depicted in ways we’ve never seen. Each disorder is represented by an individual who suffers from it, as well as an entity which embodies the manifestation of symptoms, behaviors, and emotions unique to each one. The spectrum of disorders and syndromes we are covering is broad—they range from sleep to sexual, from impulse control to personality. There are some with which you may be familiar, and some you likely never knew existed.

The book is designed in such a way that the viewer will be shown glimpses into the days, lives, and worlds—both real and delusional, both inward and external—of individuals you may pass by on the street, or sit across from at your dinner table, or might have known in childhood, or work with as an acquaintance. These are real people—they are you, me, all of us—and we want to shed light on these disorders in ways which will both enlighten viewers and perhaps show the people represented in these pages that they are not alone, and that we do see them. That we need to see them.

We consider this a groundbreaking venture, and would like to have you involved.

Each Monday, we will be posting a “Disorder of the Day” along with a sneak peek of the artwork Luke has created for it. We would love to have you interact with us about your experience (or inexperience) with the disorder—perhaps some preconceived notions or misunderstandings you’d care to share...or, conversely, a familiarity which might even help us understand it better as we make this journey in hopes of blowing the stigmas attached to these afflictions to smithereens.

Stay tuned for more news on this...and please stop by for the Monday posts if you care to join us in discussing these disorders.

We recently announced that Villipede Publications was collaborating with Michael Bailey to bring his collection to life...and that Daniele Serra, renowned Italian artist, would be illustrating the interior and designing the cover.

Michael's story "Primal Tongue" is up for a Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in Short Fiction this year, so we wish him luck with that and are proud that Michael chose us to publish this collection.

You can find Michael editing and publishing quality horror, sci-fi, and fantasy work from some of the leading writers in the industry with Written Backwards and Dark Regions Press.

You can also see some of Daniele Serra's work on his website, http://www.multigrade.it.

Villipede Publications releases DOUBLE FEATURE, first in series of dark digital duos

The first in what we hope to be a unique series of  literary duos paired for various reasons, VILLIPEDE DOUBLE FEATURE 1 features stories by Damir Salkovic and Rob Oxley.

From the Introduction:
"Intoxication and Insanity. Anarchy and Authority. Good and Evil. Night and Day. Pork Chops and Applesauce. Leprechauns and Nebulas..."
(Read more on the "Look Inside" feature on Amazon.)

"Salkovic's story offers an alternative glimpse of post-cold war revelation, as Russian military men tend to a dark temple and the destructive, unfathomable alien forces that are kept prisoner beneath it. An American spy has seen first-hand the frightening power of the Black Ziggurat, and collaborates with the government to investigate and eventually control the dark forces for themselves. Oxley’s story is a grungy walk with Andy, the emotionally-damaged junkie main character, through a fairly normal day in a near-future world gone crazy. Citizens openly lose their minds in public view from a mysterious pathogen known as the Spell, and a street drug offers the only reprieve from its madness."

Available for 99 cents via the links below.
